We are finally onstage with Swan Lake! It is easy to forget what all the work is for when we are in the studio hour after hour, day after day. But the moment the curtain opens, every second of work makes sense as we share our movement with the audience.
Being on stage and in the theatre brings with it many unexpected experiences. 'The show must go on' is a mantra that proves itself over and over in the most unexpected ways. Last night during our performance in London, Ontario, we had a special guest flying amongst the swans.
As I boured on stage for the White Swan pas de deux I caught a strange shadow out of the corner of my eye. At first I thought I must have been seeing things, which was rather disconcerting considering what I was about to do. As Hiroto and I continued into our pas de deux, it was clear that a bat had decided that it was a good time for his nightly flight.
I could hear whispers from the audience and from backstage as people noticed the bat. It was kind of nice to have some company onstage, and the slight comic relief definitely helped me to relax. He continued to circle around us and even squealed as we danced.
One has to wonder if the bat was a spy sent by the evil Rothbart to keep track of his Swan Queen and her escapade with his rival, Siegfried.
